The Art of Kashmiri Papier Mâché
Papier mâché is one of Kashmir’s most celebrated crafts, practised in Srinagar for centuries and known locally as kar-i-kalamdani. Paper pulp is shaped, dried and smoothed, then painted freehand by a skilled naqash (painter) with fine brushes before being sealed with lacquer. The bird-and-blossom artwork on this box reflects the Kashmiri love of gardens and nature, making it a small piece of living heritage.
