Handmade decor with a story

Paper mache has been made in Kashmir for centuries. Our pieces use the same methods: paper pulp shaped over moulds, then painted freehand with traditional motifs such as the chinar leaf, the paisley (badam) and Gul-o-Bulbul, the rose and the nightingale. They sit as happily in a modern room as in a traditional one.

Questions

Is every piece really handmade in Kashmir?

Yes. Each piece is shaped from paper pulp and painted freehand in our family workshop in Zadibal, Srinagar, led by master craftsman Nasir Hussain Mugloo. Because the painting is done by hand, small variations make every piece one of a kind. Meet our artisans.

What is Kashmiri paper mache made of?

Paper is soaked and pounded into a pulp, pressed over a mould in layers and left to dry. The surface is then smoothed, painted by hand by a naqash (painter) and finished with lacquer. The result is light, strong and richly decorated.

How do I look after paper mache?

Dust it with a soft, dry cloth. Keep it away from water, direct heat and long hours of strong sunlight, and it will keep its colour and shine for many years.

How long does delivery take?

Ready-to-ship pieces leave our workshop in 1–3 working days. Made-to-order pieces are made for you and take 20–45 working days before dispatch. Shipping is free worldwide on orders over $100, and free within India on orders above ₹2,500. See our shipping policy for details.
