Islimi Art

Islimi is the flowing arabesque: scrolling stems, tendrils and split leaves that curl and interlace into one continuous pattern. It comes from the Persian decorative tradition that shaped so much Kashmiri craft, and it is admired for its rhythm and balance rather than for any single flower.

Painting islimi well takes a steady hand, because each curve has to flow into the next without a break. You will find it on vases, ring and earring boxes and figurines. For pieces painted with real gold, see Real Gold Art.
