Hazara

Hazara means “a thousand”, and the name says it all: a Hazara piece is covered edge to edge in small, tightly packed flowers, with almost none of the background left showing. It is one of the most recognisable designs in Kashmiri papier mâché, and one of the most time-consuming, because every bloom, leaf and outline is painted freehand by the naqash (painter) with very fine brushes.

On a good Hazara piece no two flowers are identical, the colours stay crisp where they meet, and the pattern wraps around corners and lids without breaking. Here you will find Hazara jewellery boxes, clutch purses, ring boxes and larger decor. For the most detailed grade, see Fine Hazara; for simpler everyday pieces, see Generic Hazara.
