Embossed Art

Embossed work, known in our workshop as wutlayeth, is papier mâché with raised relief. Before any painting starts, the artisan builds up flowers, leaves and borders so they stand slightly proud of the surface. The naqash then paints and gilds the raised areas, and the lacquer finish catches the light on every edge.

Because the relief is modelled by hand first, embossed pieces take longer to make than flat-painted ones. Here you will find embossed medallion boxes, keepsake boxes, wall and ceiling panels and furniture. Many pair with the Gulandar Gul design.
